Mike Smiley holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine.  Inspired by the magnificent barns of rural Maine, he built his first timber frame in 1980.  Since then, he has completed over 80 timber frames throughout the state.

His work has been featured in Maine Home+Design and on the cover of Joiners’ Quarterly.  In 1998, he built the center section of the timber frame for MOFGA’s Unity Hall, the Exhibition Hall of the Common Ground Country Fair.

Mike designs his frames to meet the aspirations of his perspective clients, subject to the usual economic constraints.  A practical man, he wants to “do what works”, but he does have his own asthetic, favoring an appearance of strength beyond what would be strictly required structurally.  “I build chunky frames”, he says, almost apologetically.
